History, art and culture are the three protagonists of the city of Empoli, proud of its old quarter, of great artistic value, and proud of being the birthplace of important historical characters, such as the painter Jacopo Carucci, known as Pontormo, and of the musician Ferruccio Busoni.

The main historical buildings surround the Piazza Farinata degli Uberti or dei Leoni: Palazzo Ghibellino, seat of the Palaeontology Museum, the Palazzo Pretorio and the Collegiate Church of St Andrew, with his fine art gallery, one of the oldest ecclesiastical museums, presenting true Tuscan masterpieces of the 14th to the 16th centuries.

In the Pontorme borough the town, you can visit the house where Jacopo Carucci was born, as well as the church of St Michael, where his paintings of John the Evangelist and the Archangel Michael are displayed.
