Fucecchio • A castle on the Via Francigena

Fucecchio • A castle on the Via FrancigenaThe history of Fucecchio is linked above all to the Via Francigena ( the old pilgrim way which some one thousand years ago linked Canterbury to Rome), that here crossed the Arno, a part of whose antique stone pavement may still be tread on around Galleno.

The heart of the city consists of the Corsini Complex, on the remains of the old mediaeval castle, now the seat of the Fucecchio Museum, and of the Poggio Salamartano, a religious centre for the local population since the 11th century. The journalist Idro Montanelli was born here.

The Montanelli Bassi Foundation presents a vast array of documents about the journalist and his studies of Rome and Milan, entirely moved in there.
